This is a result of my project related to the course LATINA – learning and teaching in a digital world. With the use of various simple digital tools, and interdisciplinary approach, I have developed a digital learning resource for use in teaching. My interest in texture is based on texture as an aesthetic expression and experience. The project is presented on the LATINA course Tuesday May 12, 2009
This film is a result of an exploration of textures in my office. I have also collected some textures from the corridors in the building.
What is texture?
The term texture can be explained as a surface tactile and visual character, expression and quality. Through tactile experience we will be able to experience the physical variations in the surface. Repeated physical experiences with different textures provide a number of concrete experience with texture variations that is stored as Tactile memories. Through the visual experience we can imagine the physical variations of the surface based on previous concrete experiences. We can also experience variations in light, shadow, color value and the finer nuances of the surface.
The term texture is often mixed with the term structure that can be defined as a material assembly or the assembly of the surface. Conceptual confusion often occurs in situations where the structure is visible on the surface, For example in wood, brick and woven wallpapers. The structure of the material affects the texture expression.
You should also explore Wikipedia definition of texture. In my opinion it is quit comprehensive.
For this task you work two and two together. Choose an object that the other student will have to explore. Don`t show it to each other.
- Describe the texture of the object with your eyes closed. (tactile experience)
- Open your eyes and describe the texture as you see it. (visual experience)
Both shall do the task but change objects.
Discuss the different experiences you get with texture through concrete experience versus experience through digital tools
